Candle Holder Flow

The New Swedish Pewter collection was created prior to Svenskt Tenn’s 80-year anniversary in 2004. It was developed by 10 female Swedish designers to honour Svenskt Tenn’s founder Estrid Ericson. The candle holder Flow is one of the objects in the collection.

With Gustavian column-shaped candle holders as inspiration, Sissi Westerberg decided to create a contemporary version in pewter. The base of the candle holder has a soft shape that makes the pewter appear as if it accidentally has flowed and hardened.

The expression is modern and contemporary, at the same time as it fits beautifully with Svenskt Tenn's early pewter objects from the 1920s.

The artist, Sissi Westerberg, works with everything from sculptures and installations to jewellery design and craft projects. She graduated from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm in 2002. Westerberg has also studied at Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem. She is now artistic director of Rejmyre Art Lab and associate professor at Ädellab, the program for jewellery and art at Konstfack in Stockholm.

Pewter

When Estrid Ericson founded Svenskt Tenn in 1924, pewter had already established itself as one of the most exciting materials of the age. For the opening of the store, she commissioned Svenskt Tenn’s logo from the leading graphic designer of the day, Akke Kumlien. Bertil Lybeck sketched two angels in the seal, which nowadays has come to be known as the “Angel Mark”.

Historically, winged figures were often depicted in hallmarks, thereby guaranteeing the highest quality pewter. Since then, Svenskt Tenn’s own pewter goods have always been stamped with the Angel Mark. The items are also marked with the year.
