Candle Holder Bamboo Pewter

220 USD (inkl. moms)

"Candles should be so high that the light shines from above. This is more flattering for the people sitting around the candles.” Estrid Ericson.

Josef Frank designed this pewter and bamboo candlestick in 1952 based on this idea of Estrid Ericson’s. It’s a tribute to the exoticism of the 1800s, which represented a longing for the unknown and the dreams of distant lands.

  • Designer: Josef Frank

Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Konstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925 he started the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleagues Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Pewter is a soft material that requires careful treatment. We recommend using cotton gloves when handling pewter. Objects that are not being used can be stored in a plastic or felt bag to avoid scratching.

It is generally recommended to avoid using polish on pewter, since it can cause scratches. To remove fingerprints and other stains, rinse the pewter in warm water with a small amount of dish detergent. Dry with a soft cloth. For more advanced cleaning of pewter objects we recommend a professional restorer, for example, KA Johnsson in Stockholm.

Pewter has a lower melting point than other metals, which means that candles should never be left to burn down completely. This can cause the pewter to melt and lose its shape, which cannot be restored. As a precaution, blow out the candles when there is still 4-5 cm left.
