Mixing different material was typical for Josef Frank’s designs. In Sideboard 2137 the white lacquered frame meets the tabletop and fittings in walnut and Josef Frank’s typical acorn shaped hinges in brass. He drew these types of sideboards during his time at the firm Haus und Garten in Vienna in the 1920s. Similar sideboards are for instance represented in Haus Beer in Vienna, which he designed. A version of the sideboard was commissioned for an interior to Consul General Svedelius’s home in Brazil. Irregular front placement to create an exciting shape. Josef Frank designed the sideboard 2137 during the first half of the 1950s.

Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Technische Hochschule (the Vienna University of Technology) in 1903 – 1908. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925, he founded the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleague Oskar Wlach. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood that is varnished or coated. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat or use polish, oil or abrasive cleaners on the furniture.

Avoid placing vases, books, placemats and the like, on the cabinet top when the furniture is new, as colour variations can occur on the surface. Also avoid exposing the furniture to large changes in temperature and humidity.

Contact a furniture restorer if the coating or wood gets damaged, as it can get worse if not tended to.
