Cabinet 881, which also goes by the name "National Museum Cabinet", was originally called "Cabinet with 21 drawers." This is how Josef Frank named it in the original drawing in 1938, but he had to have had a change of mind at the last minute, as the final version only had 19 drawers. In 1952, the National Museum in Stockholm acquired the cabinet, which was then incorporated into the museum’s permanent collection. Since the 1950s, the cabinet has been manufactured at the Eriksson och Söner carpentry outside Nyköping in Sweden.

Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Svenskt Tenn’s furniture is made from wood that is varnished or coated. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with mild dish detergent or soapy water. Dry with a soft cloth. Do not expose the furniture to prolonged humidity or direct heat or use polish, oil or abrasive cleaners on the furniture.

Avoid placing vases, books, placemats and the like, on the cabinet top when the furniture is new, as colour variations can occur on the surface. Also avoid exposing the furniture to large changes in temperature and humidity.

Contact a furniture restorer if the coating or wood gets damaged, as it can get worse if not tended to.
