Japanese Magnolia

Svenskt Tenn exhibited Japanese Magnolia 2020.03.27 - 2020.08.09

A mild breeze sweeps through the curtain. The birds are returning from overseas and the thorny Magnolia branches are in full bloom. It is spring at Svenskt Tenn, and the gallery shows an environment named after a timeless GP & J Baker design.

Svenskt Tenn's founder, Estrid Ericson, started collaborating with the British textile company GP & J Baker in the 1930s. Since then, Svenskt Tenn has had the exclusive right to sell several of their historic designs. In the spring of 2020, William Turner's “Japanese Magnolia” is revived, with its naturalistic motif depicting magnolia trees inhabited by birds and butterflies. The print was designed in 1917 and has probably never been produced since. Now, over a hundred years later, it is launched at Svenskt Tenn.
