Famna 2020

SVENSKT TENN EXHIBITS famna 2020 04.02.2020 – 22.03.2020

“The meeting between contemporary design and Josef Frank's and Estrid Ericson's classic eclecticism was the inspiration behind the shape of the sofa. The warm and homely qualities of a bed was a recurring thought, expressed in the form of the cushions. The name Famna (Embrace) refers to its generous depth and low seat height that invites you to a comfy rest with its embracing form.”

The Famna sofa is designed by the Stockholm-based design and architecture studio TAF, founded by Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom. Since the company was established in 2002, TAF has received international attention through its work on everything from exhibitions, interior, and product design. The designs have been exhibited at MoMa in New York and are part of both the Swedish National Museum's and the Danish Design Museum's permanent collections.

The thin and rounded sofa frame requires a solid craftsmanship both in construction and upholstering. It is manufactured at O.H. Sjögrens Furniture Factory in Tranås, which has been producing upholstered furniture for Svenskt Tenn since 1982. A team of exceptional furniture makers, seamstresses and padding staff are working on the production. The shape and size of the sofa is adjusted to best utilize materials and minimize spillage.

As with the rest of the upholstered furniture in the range, the manufacture of Famna 2020 is high-end “haute couture” with every single sofa made by hand. The construction of the sofa can be likened to a wooden boat hull, a frame with its floor and deck beams made of solid wood, plywood and masonite. The sofa legs in solid beech have been turned and then lacquered. The seat cushions consist of durable spiral springs that provide exceptional comfort while at the same time reducing the amount of polyether required. The five back cushions are all the same size making it easy to move them around on the sofa, and they contain down and synthetic stuffing that is produced locally in Tranås. The shape and size of the sofa have been adapted to make the most of the material and minimise waste.
