Klöverblad is a print with green clover meanders over a white background. This wallpaper has a clean and simple print designed by Josef Frank in the 1940s. The wallpaper is balanced and soothing and unlike Josef Frank’s other vibrant prints. If you look carefully you can find two four-leaf clovers in the billowing rapport.

The wallpaper is distemper printed on non-woven in accordance with an old tradition at Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik, where each individual machine setting is still carried out by hand by experienced distemper printers. This imbues the wallpaper design with a more vibrant feel and the technique brings us closer to Josef Frank’s original and design concept.

Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Technische Hochschule (the Vienna University of Technology) in 1903 – 1908. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925, he founded the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleague Oskar Wlach. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Remove any grease stains on the wallpaper by scraping away the excess grease with a blunt knife. Begin at the edges and work your way in so the stain doesn’t spread. Pat some potato flour or baby powder on the stain to help absorb the grease. Brush away the powder remains with a soft brush. If the grease stain remains, place a clean tissue paper on the stain and iron it on low heat.

Allow wet stains, for example mud, to dry thoroughly before brushing them with a soft brush. Many light stains can be removed with old white bread. Gently rub a piece of moist bread on the stain until it fades.

  • Sustainability and manufacturing

    Material

    Non-Woven

Svenskt Tenn’s wallpapers are manufactured in Sweden from non-woven material comprising synthetic fibres and paper pulp. It’s a combination that makes the material durable and easy to use. The material in the wallpapers is certified in accordance with the OEKO-Tex 100 standard. The synthetic fibres are derived from recycled material including plastic bottles, while the pulp comes from FSC-certified forests. The wallpapers’ colours and varnishes are water-soluble. They are completely free of PVC, heavy metals and other environmentally hazardous substances. Water is the only solvent used at the factory. Any production waste can be recycled as energy when incinerated and residue dyes are reused. The energy used during production is carbon offset.

This is how the Elephant wallpapers are printed

Josef Frank’s wallpaper patterns are printed using the distemper printing technique, while wallpaper with Estrid Ericsson’s Elefant design are printed using screen printing. The technique is not as old as distemper printing, and is somewhat more automated. In conjunction with screen printing, stencils are used where the colour is pressed out through small holes and creates the design image. In this way, many fine details can be printed since the technique is more exact and creates a fine depth. When screen printing, transparent colours can also be used, which provides a lovely watercolour effect.

The Elefant pattern is printed using a stencil and obtains a fine, matt expression. In the final stage, a layer of transparent colour is added which makes the wallpaper hardy and also dryable.

Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik has a unique screen printing machine. It was extended 10 years ago and two new printing stations were added, which makes it possible to print more advanced patterns with more colours. But the machine is unable to create artisanal wallpaper without the interplay of committed and knowledgeable humans. Printing master Håkan Andersson is one of those who works with production. He has been here since the start and, with 30 years’ experience, he knows the machine’s qualities, weaknesses and strengths to a tee.
